Where Selfies Began

Bill Sanford Nye, known for turning complex science into mainstream intrigue, took a pioneering leap in 1999 by capturing what we now call a selfie. He used a digital camera during his foray into self-portraiture, as smartphones with front-facing lenses were not yet on the market.

This early adoption by the mechanical engineer-turned-TV presenter predated the selfie’s explosion into popular culture, which surged with the spread of smartphones and social media platforms like Instagram around the 2010s. The term “selfie” was first used in an Australian online forum in 2002 and became Oxford Dictionary’s word of the year in 2013.
